Aaron and Elaina's Kauai Dos and Don'ts

Aaron Sharp | June 30, 2021

Last month Elaina and celebrated out 15th wedding anniversary by take a trip, without kids, to the Hawaiian island of Kauai. Elaina has been to Hawaii before, but this was my first trip, and as a public service to our readers here are some dos and don’ts* from our trip.

Do plan on laying on the beach for a while. We spend the first day and a half of our trip just lounging, and it was fantastic.

Don’t plan on renting a car without selling a kidney on the black market. In case you didn’t know there is a rental car shortage right now. We had a jeep for 3 days and were very fortunate to have rented it a couple of months before the trip. People trying to rent the day they landed were being quoted $1,200. It is so bad that people in Kauai are renting out their personal vehicles. One taxi driver told us that people are buying new cards, renting them out, and paying them off in three months.

Do eat as much hula pie as your body can hold.

Don’t go to Hawaii in the near future if you don’t like taking Covid tests.

Do see as much of the island as you possibly can.

Don’t visit Waimea Canyon if you have a thing with heights. I speak from personal experience.

Do take the river cruise to the fern grotto.

Don’t plan on just calling an Uber or a Lyft if you need to get somewhere.

Do watch the sun rise over the Pacific Ocean.

Don’t be surprised if your hotel has removed the ice machines because of Covid.

Do partake of meals at Keoki’s Paradise, Eating House 1849, Duke’s Beach House, and Tidepools.

Don’t plan on doing anything in a hurry.

Do eat shave ice every day.

*To the grammar nerds out there it can be “dos and don’ts or do’s and don’ts”. I refer you to this grammar girl article where she says, “If you're writing for yourself, spell it any way you want. Just be consistent.” All that to say this is my post and I don’t think dos should have an apostrophe, even if it reminds me of MS DOS.
